Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government after 8 police officers were killed by criminals in an encounter in Kanpur.

After the policemen were killed in the encounter, Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to attack the Uttar Pradesh government. He wrote a tweet in Hindi which read,

“Another proof of ‘Gundaraj’ in Uttar Pradesh. When the police are not safe, how will the public be? My heartfelt condolences are with the families of the slain martyrs and I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Rahul Gandhi’s sister and another Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi also highlighted that four members of a family in Prayagraj and said that it is unusual for criminals to rule in such a way in the state. She also demanded accountability from the government. She said in a tweet,

“Soon after the dreadful incident in Kanpur, four persons of a family were killed in Prayagraj. A father-daughter was murdered in Ghaziabad. In Uttar Pradesh, it is unusual in Uttar Pradesh for criminals to rule the roost like this. In the light of such anarchy, accountability must be fixed.”

The Encounter That Killed 8 Policemen

At least 8 police officers of Uttar Pradesh Police were killed in an encounter with the criminals in Kanpur on Friday. A superintendent of police was also killed in the incident.

The encounter took place in Dikru village which comes under Chaubeypur police station. It took place at midnight on Thursday.

The team had approached the hideout place of the criminal and just as they were about to arrest him, a chunk of bullets came towards them from a rooftop which killed the Superintendent of Police Devendra Mishra and three other subinspectors and four constables. As per the officials, the criminals might have got beforehand information about the raid.

Vikas Dubey and his close aides had put up a huge roadblock that prevented police to approach their hideout. When the police team was unaware of what was happening, the criminals fired at them from a building rooftop. As soon as the information about the incident came in, the additional District General and the Inspector General of Kanpur along with the senior Superintendent of Kanpur rushed to the spot. The forensic team too came in and began the investigation.
