At a time when India is going through an unprecedented financial crisis, author and columnist Chetan Bhagat said that the country will suffer more if citizens continue to ignore the present economic situation.

In an exclusive conversation with India Today TV, author and columnist Chetan Bhagat criticised the country’s citizens including the youth who seem busy “solving Bollywood cases” and are not concerned about the economy at all.

“Any government which knows that people do not care of the economy will not spend time on solving the crisis,” he said. “People don’t care about the economy. Why should a politician care?” Did Bhagat ask?

He went on to say that the economy will remain stagnant if people do not demand the government to fix issues that are plaguing the Indian economy.

Bhagat expressed concern over the declining job situation in the country and asked how batches that are graduating next year will secure jobs. “Should they be solving Bollywood cases or should they spend time figuring how they can get a job?” Bhagat asked.

During the interview, the author elaborates on a column he wrote a few days ago on the ongoing economic crisis. He said common Indians will become poorer if the situation is not fixed. Bhagat urged the youth to stop looking at their phones and start talking about the economy.

“At the moment, the youth in India is ignoring what’s happening around them,” he said.

Bhagat also spoke about how the strict nationwide lockdown impaired India’s economy, leading to massive job losses and demand crisis. Bhagat in his recent column wrote that such a “draconian lockdown was unnecessary”.

Elaborating on what he wrote, Bhagat said, “We (India) can’t afford it. We are a mid-income to low-income nation by global standards. We are a developing country.”

He said it is easy for a rich man to spend six months at home without working but added that a poor man does not have the same privilege.

“We cannot afford this crazy lockdown,” said Bhagat and added that it has resulted in the 23.9% GDP contraction.
