People in India have grown up with nostalgic memories of Parle-G biscuit. This biscuit has been every chai lover’s dream. It’s interesting to know that Parle-G has been a good “filler” in these times of COVID 19, when it’s difficult to find something to eat or to snack on, and has seen it’s highest sales ever during this period of lockdown.
According to the reports, Rs5 Parle-G pack biscuits came in handy for hungry migrants who traveled hundreds of kilometers away; a journey that is going to be unforgettable for them.
Parle-G which has been a household brand since 1938 and sold the maximum number of biscuits during the lockdown because of many reasons. Firstly, it is affordable. Secondly, it’s a good filler with taste. Lastly, it comes under the category of essential needs.
According to The Economic Times, Parle Products refused to divulge the sales details but confirmed that March, April, and May have been their best months in over eight decades.
“We’ve grown our overall market share by nearly 5%… And 80– 90% of this growth has come from Parle-G sales. This is unprecedented,” ET quoted Mayank Shah, category head at Parle Products as saying.
“During the lockdown, Parle-G became the comfort food for many; and for several others, it was the only food they had on them. This is a common man’s biscuit; people who cannot afford bread – buy Parle-G,” ET quoted Shah as saying.
He further said, “We had several state governments requisitioning us for biscuits… they were in constant touch with us, asking about our stock positions. Several NGOs bought humongous quantities from us. We were lucky to have restarted production from March 25 onwards,” adds Shah.
