When it comes allowing or disallowing men or women in the temple, more often women have been the one to face the ire of traditional bondage. However, there are a few temples that do not allow the entry of men. Here are 8 such temples in India where men are not allowed an entry:
Attukal Temple
Located in Kerala, the temple celebrates the killing of demon king Daruka by the brave Bhadrakali goddess. Women celebrate Pongala festival, especially in the third shrine. The temple disallows the entry of men during this period. The Devi here is also worshipped as Goddess Bhagavathi.
2. Santoshi Mata Temple
Santoshi Mata or Maa is the goddess of satisfaction. Women, mostly unmarried girls worship her so that their wishes come true. On Friday they observe fast and perform pooja in the temple. So on Fridays, men cannot visit a Santoshi Mata temple.
3. Temple Of Lord Brahma
Pushkar in Rajasthan is the place which has the only temple of Lord Brahma. There is a story behind this temple. According to mythology, once Lord Brahma and Goddess Saraswati were to perform pooja at the lake of Pushkar. However, Devi Saraswati was late and Lord Brahma could not wait for long as he had to perform Yagna. So he married Goddess Gayatri. It infuriated Devi Saraswati and she cursed the temple saying that if any man entered the temple his married life will be traumatic. So no man is allowed inside the temple of Lord Brahma.
4. Temple Of Bhagati Maa
Located in Kanyakumari, the temple of Bhagati Maa aka Goddess Parvati or Sati does not allow entry of men. According to mythology, Sati penanced in the middle of the sea to get Lord Shiva as her life partner. At that time Sati hand renounced the world and became sanyasi so no man can enter this temple.
5. Trimbakeshwar Temple
It is one of the jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva located in the town of Trimbak in the district of Nashik. Earlier the rules did not allow women to enter the inner premises of the temple. After it became a court case. Bombay High Court gave the verdict that if women cannot enter the inner shrine then men too should not. Now men are also not allowed to enter the inner premises of the temple. (priests excluded) Source – TOI
6. Mata Temple
Located in the city of Muzaffarpur in the state of Bihar, this temple does not allow entry of men during a particular duration. In this restricted period, only females are allowed to enter the temple.
7. Kamrup Kamakhya Temple
The temple is in the town of Guwahati in Assam state. It is dedicated to Goddess Parvati aka Sati and said to be the exact spot where Lord Shiva danced with Sati’s dead body. It is the place where the genitals of Sati fell off during the dance. In the temple, the women worship the menstrual cloth of Sati. It is the only temple that allows entry to women only going through their menstrual cycle.
8. Chakkulathukavu Temple
Located in Kerala’s Alappuzha district, men are not allowed to visit this shrine of Goddess Durga during the 10 days of fasting period in the month of Vrischikam. Many women devotees observe this fast for getting immortal blessings of Devi Durga.
