The 3rd of May is celebrated as the World Press Freedom day across the globe. As a formality, the leaders have been compelled to tweet on the occasion of the day. The top political leaders of the country lauded the efforts of the media especially at the time of a pandemic.
Like all political leaders, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee too took twitter to post her thoughts about the ‘fourth pillar of democracy’. In her tweets, she said,
“Press is the fourth pillar in a democracy and must perform its duties fearlessly. We respect journalists for their contribution to society. Our government in #Bangla has many initiatives for the welfare of many journalists. Our Government has also announced health insurance with up to 10 lakh coverage for frontline COVID workers, including journalists.”
Incidentally, India has been ranked 142 in the World Press Freedom Index behind Palestine and South Sudan that are at 137 and 138 respectively. Though there are arguments questioning the metric system of the World Press Freedom Index and it is a reflection of the situation, the Bharatiya Janata Party questioned the rating itself.
Mamata Banerjee’s tweets have garnered mixed reactions from the world of Twitter as some took a sarcastic jibe while others came in support of the Chief Minister.
Here are some of the responses to her tweet.
