The editor-in-chief of the Republic Television media network, Arnab Goswami has accused Mumbai Police of torture in custody.
In the petition failed by Arnab Goswami’s lawyer Harish Salve seeking bail, Goswami has said that the police have tortured him. According to the law website Bar and Bench, Arnab Goswami has claimed that a senior police officer hit him with a heavy boot during the arrest because of which he has got a half foot deep gash in his left hand. He also claimed that he has severe injuries to the spinal cord. He has also alleged that he was forced to drink a certain liquid by police officers who were surrounding him. After consuming the drink, he claims to have choked.
Bail Plea In Bombay High Court
The bail plea has been hearing in Bombay High Court by the bench of justices including SS Shinde and MS Karnik. In the past few weeks, Republic TV anchor Arnab Goswami has been involved in a tussle with the Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Police in many cases like the Palghar lynching, the Sushant Singh Rajput case, and the demolition of Kangana Ranaut’s house. On November 4th, Arnab Goswami was arrested from his residence by the Mumbai Police for a suicide abetment case of 2018 that was reopened recently. The bail plea of Arnab Goswami was appealed in the Bombay High Court which has reserved its hearing as of now.
The case where Goswami was arrested pertains to the suicide of an architect and interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother because of the non-payment of dues by firms. In the suicide note of Anvay Naik, he said he was forced to take his life because he was not paid the dues worth Rs. 5.40 crores by three people. Earlier this year, the Maharashtra government ordered the reinvestigation of the case by the CID.
