In a shocking incident that has come to life, a couple reportedly sold their
two-and-a-half-month-old girl child to a distant relative in West Midnapore, West Bengal. The couple was without a job due to the lockdown.
The parents did not have a job
Just like many across the country, this couple also did not have a job. While the mother was working as a house help, her employers chose to discontinue her services following the COVID-19 outbreak. On the other hand, the child’s father was a daily wage worker, and he also lost his job. They were struggling to feed the child.
Officials got a tip-off from the neighbors
The investigating officers received a tip-off from the neighbors who said that they had not seen the kid for a few days and did not hear her cries too. The officials then learned about a childless couple who were distant relatives of the child’s parents.
Following a search, the officials found the child at the distant relatives’ house. After investigation, it was revealed that the couple had sold their daughter for Rs 3,000. Police have also recorded the statements of eyewitnesses.
While the parents are on the run, district child protection officer Sandip Kumar Bose said that the child would stay at the hospital for about three to four days and then will be sent to a state-run home for children.
