The acknowledgement for gay community and their emotions is rising ever since many countries have openly endorsed about their contribution for the society. Owing to the above fact an historic move comes from the Indian side where In a historic move, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of senior advocate Saurabh Kirpal as a judge of the Delhi High Court.
First Gay Judge At High Court
A statement issued by the apex court said a decision in this regard was taken during a meeting of the Collegium on November 11. If appointed, Kirpal will be India’s first openly gay judge. A graduate of Delhi’s St Stephens College, Saurabh Kirpal pursued his undergraduate degree in law from Oxford University followed by a master’s degree from Cambridge University.
The delay in recommending Saurabh Kirpal’s elevation was widely perceived in legal circles to be due to his sexual orientation. But this news will surely bring joy and of course a proud moment for Saurabh as well to throne the supreme seat of a judge.
This Is The Second Time When Saurabh Is Recommended
After 2017, this is the second time Saurabh Kirpal has been officially recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for elevation as a judge to the Delhi High Court. Earlier the Delhi High Court Collegium had recommended his candidature. In 2017, Justice Gita Mittal, the then-acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, had proposed his name for elevation.
Senior advocate Saurabh Kirpal is the son of Justice BN Kirpal, who was the 31st Chief Justice of India from May 2002 to November 2002. In his over two decades old law career in India, Kirpal has specialised in areas including civil, commercial and constitutional law. In March 2021, Saurabh Kirpal was designated as a senior advocate with all 31 judges of the Delhi High Court unanimously voting in his favour.
