Over the past few days, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi has initiated discussions with two economic experts in the country – Raghuram Rajan and Abhijit Banerjee, regarding the stance of the economy in the country due to the COVID-19 crisis. However, there seems to a deeper narrative to this, as experts feel that these discussions could be pointing out to a relaunch for Rahul as the party president.
Rahul had quit as the Congress President last year
Last year, owning up the responsibility for his party’s demoralizing defeat at the hands of BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi quit as the president of Congress. Sonia Gandhi had stepped in as the Interim Head of the party.
Nonetheless, it seems that the Congress High Command is unable to look beyond Rahul as the party president, and hence, is thinking of reinstating the Wayanad MP as the leader of the party.
Discussion with the economic experts
With BJP struggling to sustain confidence amongst the citizens regarding the economic policies, Congress has decided that it is the right time to build the momentum for Rahul’s relaunch.
Hence, Rahul held discussions with two economic experts in the country. The idea, reportedly, is to project Rahul as someone who understands economic issues and governance. The main derivative of both the discussions was that during the time of crisis, money must be made available directly in the hands of the poor.
However, many others feel that these lectures must not be the end of Rahul’s attempts in the coming days. There is scope for Rahul to grow as a leader, and according to various opinions, Rahul must bring himself out of the shell and shed the tag of a ‘part-time’ politician.
