On Friday, in an alarming way, China’s Wuhan abruptly raised its death toll by 50 percent. The Country that has been accused of hiding numbers and misleading the world admitted that the death toll was mistakenly reported.
Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus where the first case was reported had a death toll of 2,579. On Friday, the government abruptly updated the number to 3,869 which is close to 50 percent rise even though there weren’t any new deaths reported. The updated number came from a social media post by the city government.
Mistakenly reported, says the government
When China’s coronavirus curve began to flatten, it had a death toll of around 3,500. When the virus spread to the other countries where the death toll crossed 10,000 figures, there were serious questions raised about the authenticity of the Chinese numbers. The recent claim by the government where it says that the numbers were ‘mistakenly’ reported only legitimizes the doubt on their numbers.
A media outlet had also reported that Wuhan had hosted a mass banquet for tens and thousands of people on the occasion of Lunar new year days before the government declared the coronavirus as an epidemic in the city.
Post the revision of numbers, the national death tally has raised by 39 percent to 4,632. The justification provided by the authorities is that due to the hospitals being overwhelmed during the initial days of the outbreak, the numbers were being reported incorrectly or would have been delayed.
The special government operating team that is overseeing the containment efforts by the Communist government in Wuhan said that the revision of figures not only concern people’s life but also the government’s credibility. The team went onto say that the revision not only respect the rights of an individual but also the government’s respect for an individual.
The virus that originated in Wuhan has so far infected 21 lakh people and killed over 1.4 lakh people across the world. The virus is believed to have originated in the wet food market of Wuhan although there isn’t solid evidence to back the claim.
