China-Based Hackers Trying To Steal Important COVID-19 Related Research Information: US Officials

United States Officials, on Wednesday, announced that China-based hackers have been spotted trying to attack US-based organizations who are working on COVID-19 research. While the report was initially published in the Reuters, the US officials have backed up the statement of the publication with their recent announcement.

Ever since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, the already sour relationship between the US and China has turned bitter. While the US has been constantly making announcements signalling China’s role in creating the pandemic, the Asian powerhouse has been denying all the allegations. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also had a significant role to play, in this dispute.

Revealed both by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as well as Department of Homeland Security, this news could have a crucial role to play in the relationship of the two countries. Meanwhile, the U.S officials have started asking organizations and public healthcare professionals to be vigilant for cyber theft.

Going into finer details, it has been reported that hackers have been spotted attempting to identify and illicitly obtain valuable intellectual properties along with public health information pertaining to vaccines, treatments and testing from networks as well as people affiliated with the research.

However, it is to be noted here that the US officials have not given any further information regarding the method of breach. The Chinese Embassy in Washington is yet to respond to these allegations. Nonetheless, based on similar previous instances, the Chinese officials are expected to deny the allegations.
