Bengaluru being the digital hub of the world is now all set to retain its tag of India’s It capital. The digital door numbers are said to work on Google maps making it easier to track any location in the city.
Largely, we don’t have anything to appraise about BBMP in the context of meeting deadlines to fill potholes or paying wages to Pourakarmikas for months, however, the civic body does not wish to fall flat to retain its digital reputation in the country. This came in reference to Economic Intelligence Unit listing Bengaluru as the city with the best digital environment ahead of San Francisco, globally.
Thanks to BBMP, the digital door numbers will be issued for every address within the city. It will be Digital Identification Numbers (DIN), an alphanumeric code of 7-11 characters replacing the current address format. By and large, this will eliminate the hassle of locating the address through interiors for ambulances and other emergency services, as this DIN will work on Google maps.
It is reported that BBMP has been working on the project for few months and BBMP’s own GIS enabled Property Tax Information System will be the intestinal fortitude of the DIN system.
Referring to BBMP Commissioner Mr. Manjunath’s statement to DH,
“ The project is in its final stage to take off and this will help locate an address to its exact point as the code is attached with latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates. A certain code will be keyed into Google Maps thus making it easy to identify the location instantly.”
Referring to TOI Report and Manu Aiyappa’s words,
“ The State Government had proposed this program under the Smart City Mission Project of the Central Government. The city succeeded in becoming a ‘smart city’ in 2017, in its third attempt.”
Of late, The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation had also floated a tender for a project of a similar kind. A start-up named ‘Zipper’ has won the tender for Rs.5 crore. It is said that the company allows businesses or organizations to have customised Door numbers, akin to VIP car numbers.
