Yoga guru Baba Ramdev is considering bidding for the Indian Premier League (IPL) title sponsorship for the upcoming edition of the cash-rich league. The BCCI is currently looking for title sponsors after the slot was sensationally vacated by Chinese smartphone maker Vivo last week.
The Chinese mobile manufacturing giants took the decision just a couple of days after the IPL Governing Council announced that it has retained all of its sponsors including VIVO for IPL 2020.
VIVO was in the middle of a social-media storm in the last 48 hours after the IPL GC’s decision. The BCCI and the IPL GC faced criticism for deciding to not cut ties with the Chinese company. Chinese sponsorship became a bone of contention after the deadly clashes between the Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh in June.
Recent reports suggested that the likes of Byju’s and Coca-Cola India were interested in bidding for the title sponsorship. The likes of Jio, Amazon, the Tata group, Dream11 and Adani group have been doing the rounds as potential candidates for the IPL sponsorship title too. And now Patanjali has joined the race.
“We are considering the IPL title sponsorship for this year since we want to give the Patanjali brand a global marketing platform,” Patanjali spokesperson SK Tijarawala told Economic Times before adding Patanjali is considering making a proposal to the BCCI.
It would be interesting to see BCCI’s approach when they receive the offer from Patanjali. At a time when the entire country has been vocal over supporting Indian products, signing a deal with Patanjali might turn out to be a good decision for the Indian cricket board.
