Bollywood is currently going through a rough patch. Post pandemic, only a few Hindi films like Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kashmir Files, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 turned out to be a box office success. It’s now noticed that big films have now decided to release on OTT.
Bad times for Bollywood
After Bollywood delivering back to back flops, everyone was expecting Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan to do well. And because both the films were released during the extended weekend of Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day, were expected to break several records at the ticket window.
However, both the films received a low response from the moviegoers and left everyone shocked. Both the films somehow managed to crawl over Rs 60 crore.
Now, the latest gossip suggests that as many as 10 upcoming Bollywood films featuring top stars are shifting to OTT. The list includes two Vicky Kaushal films, two Ayushmann Khurrana films, and one film by Shahid Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, and Kartik Aaryan, among other projects.
Big films moving to OTT
A source informed Pinkvilla, “Films like Govinda Naam Mera, Bloody Daddy, Mission Majnu, Freddy, Laxman Uttekar’s next with Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan, Action Hero, and Doctor G might opt for a direct to digital premiere if they get the right price. Yash Raj Films is keeping a close watch on the market to decide on the future of their two films – Maharaja and The Great Indian Family.”
The source also said, “Of the above-mentioned films, Freddy was always meant to be a direct to digital film and the talks are on with multiple players.”
However, an official statement is still awaited from the makers. Interestingly, the makers of many other mid and small-sized Hindi films too are reportedly in talks with the OTT partners for a direct-to-digital release.
