7 Superstars who ‘Ruined & Killed’ successful Bollywood Franchises

We all love a sequel or prequel to a successful movie because this takes us deeper into the characters and movies we like. Well, sometimes filmmakers take a leap of faith that just doesn’t work out for the audiences. Here’s a look at a list of actors who killed a successful franchise and how.

Bollywood stars who ruined franchises

If a film becomes a grand box office success, its makers go all out with its sequels. Mostly, they go big with the budget but then there are also a few times where they either add a superstar or replace the lead hero of the first part with a star who is deemed a bigger box office attraction.

Surprisingly, it is not every time that adding a major celebrity to a film franchise works well in its favor. This is a list of actors who killed a successful franchise and how.

Salman Khan – Race 3

In 2008, Abbas-Mustan directed a hit movie called Race starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Sameera Reddy & Anil Kapoor. The film was followed by a sequel Race 2 led by Saif with new additions like John Abraham, Deepika Padukone & Jacqueline Fernandez.

However, for the third sequel, the makers decided to go big and replaced Saif with Salman Khan and further roped in Bobby Deol with only Anil & Jacqueline as the returning star.

While Salman’s presence in an already-hit franchise, the hope was to deliver a massive blockbuster but the final outcome turned out to be a nightmare. It so happened that Race 3 was mercilessly trolled and mocked by the audiences for its dumb plot, poor dialogues, terrible songs, and inadequate performances.

Aamir Khan – Dhoom 3

Unlike Race 3, which tanked at the Box Office despite the presence of Salman Khan, Dhoom 3 was a record-breaking hit similar to its prequel. But, unlike the previous parts that are much loved, the third installment starring Aamir Khan along with Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, and Uday Chopra ruined the primary core of the franchise and revolved around its superstar villain.

Reportedly the franchise suffered for a long run and it’s been 10 years and we are yet to get an official update on the fourth part. Believe it or not, the film franchise was going well and was liked by the audience before Aamir hijacked it.

Akshay Kumar – Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara

Following the notable success of Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi starrer Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, the makers chose to go forward with a sequel taking ahead the story of Shoaib Khan played by Emraan in the film. In the sequel, however, Akshay Kumar replaced Emraan with the addition of new actors like Imran Khan and Sonakshi Sinha. The sequel was a critical as well as commercial failure killing any chance of a future film in the franchise.

While the prequel had a good story with great performances from Ajay and Emraan who were supported by iconic dialogues, the sequel focused mainly on Akshay’s character who couldn’t match up to Emraan’s performance as Shoaib.

Alia Bhatt – Sadak 2

1991’s hit film Sadak starring Sanjay Dutt, Pooja Bhatt, and Deepak Tijori saw a sequel 29 years later with Sanjay Dutt returning back to his previous role from the original film, Pooja Bhatt appearing in a cameo and adding Alia Bhatt & Aditya Roy Kapur to the cast.

Unlike the prequel, the sequel was terrible. Many viewers trolled Alia Bhatt for her poor performance. And shockingly this film’s teaser was the most disliked Teaser on YouTube.

John Abraham- Welcome Back

A sequel to the Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif starrer Welcome, Welcome Back featured John Abraham, Shruti Haasan, Naseeruddin Shah, and Dimple Kapadia. Only Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, and Paresh Rawal reprised their role.

The movie was out of most theaters after just a few weeks. Anees Bazmee, the director of the film, tried too hard to focus on John Abraham’s character but failed to deliver what Akshay Kumar did in the prequel.

Siddhant Chaturvedi-Bunty Aur Babli 2

A very cute film starring one of the favorite pairs Abhishek Bachchan and
Rani Mukerji, Bunty Aur Babli was a massive hit.

The sequel, however, replaced the amazing duo with Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh. This sequel to the superhit film released in 2005 did not receive the love of the audience as it only managed to earn 22 crores World Wide.

Sanjay Dutt – Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3

After the success of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster in 2011 starring Jimmy Sheirgill, Mahie Gill, and Randeep Hooda, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns in 2013 with Irrfan as the new addition, the makers decided to go big by adding Sanjay Dutt to the third part.

But unfortunately, the 2018 film by Tigmanshu Dhulia failed to create the stardom and hype of Sanjay Dutt which resulted in its script taking a backseat and as a result, the film was a flop.
