Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth, who was set to make an important announcement regarding the launch of his political party on December 31, has made a U-turn. The Tamil superstar has now announced that he will not join politics.
Making the announcement today, Rajinikanth cited his health condition as the reason for not taking the formal political plunge.
Rajinikanth said in a statement posted on his Twitter account that he sees as a message from God what happened during the shooting of his upcoming film ‘Annaatthe’ and the subsequent health scare.
It may be recalled that Rajinikanth was hospitalised in Hyderabad last Friday after his blood pressure fluctuated. When doctors found nothing alarming with the superstar’s health condition, he was discharged on Sunday.

Rajinikanth’s health scare followed the ‘Annaatthe’ development wherein four crew members tested positive for COVID-19. The film is being produced under the actor’s Sun Pictures banner. The shooting of the film was postponed after the crew members tested positive for the virus. “Superstar Rajinikanth and other crew members have tested negative,” Sun Pictures had later said in a statement.
Rajinikanth, in his statement today, said his pain is unexplainable.
“If I campaign only through the media and social media after I start the party, I will not be able to create the political upheaval and win big in the (upcoming Tamil Nadu) elections. No one with political experience will deny this reality,” Rajinikanth said in the statement issued in Tamil.
“I will do what I can to serve the people without getting into electoral politics. I have never hesitated to speak the truth and I sincerely request the fans and the people of Tamil Nadu, who love truth and transparency, who care about my well-being, who love me and live for me, and the people of Tamil Nadu, to accept this decision of mine,” he added.
Rajinikanth also cited the threat of coronavirus and the new COVID-19 mutant variant in his statement. The superstar announced that his organisation Rajini Makkal Mandram will function as usual.
