Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who skipped his party’s 136th foundation day event, on Monday posted a message against the newly promulgated farm laws on microblogging site Twitter. ‘Save farmers, save the country!’ he said.
“The country can never become self-sufficient without the self-sufficiency of the farmer. Take back the anti-agricultural law. Save farmers, save the country!” Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.
किसान की आत्मनिर्भरता के बिना देश कभी आत्मनिर्भर नहीं बन सकता।
कृषि विरोधी क़ानून वापस लो।
किसान बचाओ, देश बचाओ!

Ironically, Gandhi’s tweet about saving the country comes at a time when he is not present in the country. Along with Rahul Gandhi, his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi also skipped Congress’s foundation day event to visit Rahul’s grandmother in Italy.
Taking note of his absence, the ruling BJP government at the Centre was quick to take potshots at Rahul Gandhi. Responding to BJP’s criticism, party general secretary KC Venugopal said: “Is it wrong? Everybody has the right to undertake personal visits. BJP is indulging in low-level politics. They are targeting Rahul Gandhi because they want to target only one leader.”

Reacting to Gandhi’s visit, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait also said that the Congress leader neither visited their protest site nor spoke to them.
“Rahul Gandhi neither appeared anywhere in the farmers’ dharna nor did he talk to anyone … Our opposition is very weak,” he said.
