On September 25th, legendary singer SP Balasubramaniam breathed his last in Chennai. He had been hospitalized for around 2 months. A legend in the Indian Film Industry, SPB’s demise will be an irreplaceable loss for the entire fraternity.
SPB shared a special bond with Rajini
SP Balasubramaniam shared a special bond with Rajinikanth. For plenty of the latter’s films, SPB at least had one rendition to offer. In most cases, it was inevitably Rajini’s introduction song in that particular movie. The tradition became so popular that t was just impossible to imagine a Rajinikanth film without an SP Balasubramaniam song at the start.
While “My name is Billa” from the 1980 Tamil film Billa was one of the first collaborations, SPB has sung songs like “Na Autokaaran” (Baashha) “Oruvan Oruvan” (Muthu), “Em Peru Padayappa” (Padayappa), “Athanda Ithanda” from Arunachalam, “Vandenthda Paalkaran” from Annamalai, “Rakkamma Kaiyya Thattu” from Thalapathi, “Devuda Devuda” from Chandramukhi, “Ballelakkha” from Sivaji, “O Nanba” from Linga, “Enge Pogutho Vaanam” from Kochadiyaan and “Puthiya Manitha” from Endhiran.
SPB’s final song will be for a Rajinikanth film
Incidentally, SPB’s final piece of magic will be for a Rajinikanth film. Titled Annaatthe, this upcoming film of Rajini is being helmed by Siva. Produced by Sun Pictures, the film also stars Khushbu, Nayanthara, Meena, Keerthy Suresh among others
The music director of this film is D Imman. The composer, on September 25th, posted a tweet saying that he had recorded the song with SPB for Annaatthe. He said: “Legends are Immortal! With the Legendary SPB uncle while recording an energetic song for Our Superstar @rajinikanth sir’s #Annaatthe Lyric by @Viveka_Lyrics @directorsiva ‘s directorial n @sunpictures ‘s production #DImmanMusical #RIPSPBSir“
