SP Balasubramaniam, the legendary singer of the Indian Film Industry, breathed his last a few days ago. Although a Telugite, SPB’s charm had no boundaries, as his songs made a mark in plenty of other languages. Amongst his better works, we can also note down some unforgettable songs sung in the Kannada language.
‘If I have a next life, I would like to be born as a Kannadiga’
In 2015, while he was in Moodabidri to collect Alva’s Virasat award, SPB said: “If I have a next life, I would like to be born as a Kannadiga and in Karnataka.” Well, that shows his love for Kannada and Karnataka, and we must say, we are grateful to hear our language in his voice.
SPB is associated with Kannada’s yesteryear stars for some fine renditions. His most successful collaborations were with Vishnuvardhan and Shankar Nag. SPB crooned to ‘Haavina Dwesha’ in Vishnuvardhan’s debut movie Naagarahaavu while he also sang the famous ‘Chamundi Taayi’ in the actor’s final film Aptharakshaka.
‘Haadu Santoshakke’
SPB gave some memorable songs to Shankar Nag too. The duo worked on some cult songs such as ‘Geetanjali’ from CBI Shankar and ‘Bandalo Bandalo Kanchana’ from Sangliana. However, the song ‘Haadu Santoshakke’ from the movie ‘Geetha’ is something that can never be forgotten.
This song has a unique fan-base as the rendition is as popular as it was then than it is now. The current youngsters are also well-versed with this iconic song. The energy that SPB infused in this song is unmatchable and maybe, that is why a few sports teams based out of Bengaluru often use this song to entertain their fans.
While Royal Challengers Bangalore often uses ‘Haadu Santoshakke’ at their packed Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru FC also makes use of this performance in the home games at the Kanteerava. In the process, ‘Haadu Santoshakke’ has become a sort of an anthem for all the Kannadigas.
