Heavy rainfall is expected across Karnataka in the next few days, as the state is all set to face a flood-like scenario for the third time in a row. The situation is already critical in places like Kodagu, and evacuation steps are underway.
Situation likely to remain the same until Sunday
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that there will be strong southwesterly/westerly monsoonal flow over the Arabian sea, along with winds blowing at the speed of 50-60 kmph along the coast of the state. This is likely to prevail until Sunday, and hence, coastal and south-interior Karnataka is set to receive plenty of rainfall.
Heavy rains have been prevalent in regions such as Kodagu, Gokarna, Chickmangaluru, Hassan, and Mysuru in the last few days. It has also been reported that rivers Bhima, Cauvery, and Lakshmanatheertha are currently flowing at high levels.
The flood-like scenario in Kodagu
Due to the incessant rainfall in Kodagu, a flood-like situation is looming large over the district. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have already been deployed in such flood-hit regions for relief and rescue operations. Landslides were also reported in several regions of the district. According to IMD data, in the last three days, the district has received an average of 106.12 mm, 142.49 mm, and 162.4 mm.
Regarding the difficulty of the situation, district minister V Somanna said: “Due to lack of connectivity and inclement weather, rescue teams faced a tough time. Only God can save those who are missing. We are hoping to resume search operations on Saturday if rain stops.”
