Bengaluru To Extend Lockdown By A Week? BBMP Says It Needs More Time To Tackle

The city of Bengaluru has entered the fourth day of its week-long down but Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Mayor feels that the lockdown should be extended.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Mayor M Goutham Kumar spoke to the media today and said that it would be better if the lockdown is extended which will enable the frontline workers more time to tackle the spread. He also said that the municipal body has submitted the request to the government. He said,

“It will be better if we get more time to tackle COVID-19 cases, we wish for the extension fo lockdown for one more week. We have given a proposal to the government.”

With the sudden surge in the cases in the city, the state government imposed a week-long lockdown in the capital city from 14th July to 22nd. The lockdown will be lifted at 5 AM on Wednesday. During this period, like previous lockdowns, all the essential services will continue to keep functioning. But there hasn’t been a significant impact during the lockdown.

In the last 24 hours, Bengaluru witnessed 2,344 cases and 70 deaths taking the death toll to 508. The city has a total of 18,828 confirmed active cases of COVID-19. Even Karnataka witnessed its biggest spike with 4,169 cases taking its toll past the 50,000 marks. The state has 30,000 active cases and over 1,000 deaths.

India Crosses A Million

India has a total of 10,05,849 confirmed cases of COVID-19 according to the website COVID19India. Over 6,36,727 people have successfully recovered from the novel coronavirus disease. Close to 3,43,110 cases are still active. The death toll has risen to 25,622.

On Thursday, India witnessed the highest spike of 32,696 fresh cases and with 20,000 recoveries. The highest number of cases in India are coming from the states of Karnataka, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. These states have shown a steep rise in the last few months. Last month they were reporting over 400 cases per day while now they report over 1,000 cases per day.
