On Wednesday, the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi announced that it will screen every house in the capital by the 6th of July. This is seen as a part of its plan to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The National Capital of Delhi witnessed a rise of 3,947 new cases on Tuesday alone. The total cases in the national capital region to 66,602 cases. The death toll in the city also raised to 2,301. This is the biggest spike reported in a day ever since the outbreak was reported in the capital. Currently, Delhi is the second-worst affected state after Maharashtra.
After a series of meetings that happened between Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, detailed new guidelines of the Delhi COVID Response plan was released on Wednesday. Earlier this week, Amit Shah had asked the Delhi government to mark the containment zones again and also ramp up the door-to-door surveillance.
On Wednesday, the Delhi government said that the state will be strengthening the surveillance and contact tracing, especially in the worst-affected neighborhoods in order to contain the virus. It said,
“More than 2,500 new cases and up to 75 deaths are being reported every day. About 45 percent of the cases are showing features of clustering in containment zones. The administration will provide all necessary services inside these zones.”
5.5 Lakh Cases By July 31st
In the new revised strategy, strict monitoring will be deployed at the district level. The new task force will involve district commissioner of police, civic body officials, epidemiologists from the municipal corporation of Delhi, and IT professionals to monitor the Centre’s Aarogya Setu application. The rules also stated that,
“All symptomatic and asymptomatic high-risk contacts have to be tested between the fifth and tenth day of contact.”
The state of Delhi will also undergo a serological survey that will begin on the 27th of June whose results will be released on the 10th of July. As a part of this, 20 thousand samples will be collected for this. As per the government’s estimates, the state is likely to have 1 lakh cases by June 30th and 5.5 lakh cases by July 31st.
