Former Bangladesh Captain Mashrafe Mortaza Tests Positive For COVID-19

Former Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza has tested positive for COVID-19. Morsalin Mortaza, Mashrafe’s brother, revealed the news to Cricbuzz.

The second high-profile victim from the cricketing fraternity

Around a week ago, former Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi had confirmed that he had tested positive for the virus. He was the first major victim with a cricketing background. Before Afridi, a couple of cricketers from Pakistan, Scotland, and South Africa had also tested positive for the virus.

Mashrafe infected with COVID-19

Morsalin Mortaza said: “My brother has had a fever for two days. He did the test last night. Today came the test positive. He is at home in isolation.” Earlier today, the news of former Bangladesh cricketer and elder brother of ODI captain Tamim Iqbal, Nafees Iqbal contracting COVID-19 had also come out.

Apart from being a cricketer, Mashrafe is also a Member of Parliament in Bangladesh. Ever since the outbreak of the virus, Mashrafe had involved himself in various initiatives to help the poor. From donating his Bangladesh cricket’s salary to supporting 300 needy families in Narail, his birthplace, and the Lohagara Upazila with food and essential items, Mashrafe had been at the center of such activities in Bangladesh.

Mortaza has captained Bangladesh in all the three formats and has played 36 Tests, 220 ODIs and 54 T20Is for his country.
