June 11th became yet another day where India reported its highest daily increase with 10,996 new cases of COVID-19 taking the total cases past the 2,86,000 mark. This is as of Thursday according to the data of the ministry of health and family affairs.
The states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi continue to be the three worst-hit states in the country who also witnessed their largest spike on Thursday. The death toll too reached almost 400 deaths in one single day. The total death toll of the country stands at 8,498. However, 49 percent of the total reported cases are recovered in the country. That means 1,41,842 patients have been discharged.
Even as the country will cross the 3,00,000 mark over the weekend, the Indian Council of Medical Research continues to maintain that the country has not yet reached the community transmission phase. The council said that merely 1 percent of India’s population has been infected by the novel coronavirus. This statement comes after Delhi’s Health Minister Satyendar Jain revealed that more than 50 percent of the cases in the national capital has no source. He further said it is left to the central government to declare whether community transmission has taken place or not. The Joint Secretary of the Health Ministry denied any such possibilities.
India Overtakes United Kingdom
As per the serological survey conducted by the government over 83 districts in 21 states, 0.73 percent of the population showed evidence of exposure to the novel coronavirus and also said that a large population is still susceptible to the virus. The survey also found out that largely most cases in containment zones are either Asymptomatic or having mild Symptoms. As per the Niti Aayog member VK Paul, urban slums are most vulnerable to the spread of infection.
India has now overtaken the United Kingdom and has assumed a fourth place in the list of countries with more number of cases. India, with 2,95,772, is behind Russia, Brazil, and the United States of America. Russia has 5 lakh cases, Brazil has 7.72 lakhs and the United States leads with 20 lakh cases. On May 24th, India entered into the top 10 list and within three weeks, India has reached the fourth spot.
