Only a few days ago, the city of Bengaluru had 40 containment zones but now the containment zones have shot up to over 113 containment zones. Experts predict it’s a dangerous time for the city.

The continuous rise in the number of cases and the number of containment zones in Bengaluru has given way to panic among the people who were prepping for the first phase of Unlock. On Thursday, the containment zone shot up to 113 from 40 zones last week. On Wednesday alone, the city reported 42 cases. The city has recorded 23 COVID-19 deaths.

New Containment Zones

The area of Padarayanapura, the first containment zone of the city, continued to test the health workers. A slum in SK Garden reported 19 positive cases recently. All 19 patients are residents of the Tank Mohalla Road and are aged between 5 and 38. The contact tracing and isolating is underway. In SK Garden, there are close to 35,000 residents and the slum where the positive cases have been detected has over 2,000 families. The health official of BBMP said,

“All those who tested positive are either family members or neighbors of the first patient. The entire locality is worried. We had identified about 42 primary contacts and 50 secondary contacts. A regular health survey is also being conducted to detect people with symptoms of COVID19.”

The situation in Hongasandra and Shivajinagar also worsened as it witnessed a sudden spike during the lockdown phase. The officials of the BBMP are asking for more manpower as the cases are set to rise in the city.

On Thursday, a couple managing a medical shop in the Lingayat Beedhi area in Kengeri tested positive for COVID-19. Soon after that, extensive sanitization of the area took place and was sealed down later. Because the area is congested, the officials sealed down the entire area instead of sealing down a street. Apparently, as per the locals, the woman who tested positive returned from Kerala and had failed to quarantine herself.

While there are concerns about the community transmission in the city, Dr. Satyanarayana Mysore says that as long as the cases are from primary and secondary contacts, containment and buffer zones, there shouldn’t be a question of community transmission. He said,

“The more the Influenza-like Illness cases and lesser Severe Acute respiratory Illness cases are better from a medical point of view.”
