Big News: For The First Time, Number Of Recoveries Overtake Active Cases In India

For the first time since the outbreak was reported in the country, India has more number of recoveries than active cases as of Wednesday morning.

The tally of the total positive cases of the country soared past the 2.7 lakh mark as the country reported over 9,000 cases for the 8th consecutive day. The Country now has 2,76,583 coronavirus positive cases. A total of 1,35,206 patients have successfully recovered from the deadly disease. The active cases in the county as of Wednesday morning is at 1.33 lakh. The death tally, however, crossed 7,745. 279 patients died on Tuesday alone.

Among the states, Maharashtra leads in the number of recoveries as well as the active cases. Maharashtra, last week, crossed the official China figures of positive cases as it has reported over 90,000 cases so far. The capital city Mumbai reported 51,000 cases which is 700 short of the epicenter of the virus, Wuhan. With recoveries of 42,639 patients, Maharashtra tops the chart of recoveries among the states. The states of Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Delhi have all reported over 10,000 recoveries so far. Tamil Nadu with 18,325 recoveries, Gujarat with 14,373 and Delhi with 11,861. However, these four states also top the list of most number of cases.

Ministers Continue To Deny Community Transmission

Among the states that have a high recovery, rates are Rajasthan with 8,000 recoveries out of 11,000 cases, Madhya Pradesh with 6,700 recoveries with 9,000 cases and Gujarat with 14,000 recoveries out of 21,000 cases. Although, Gujarat also has a high fatality rate as over 1,313 people have succumbed to the virus.

Even as cases begin to soar, the ministers continue to dismiss the possibility of community transmission. Maharashtra’s Health minister Rajesh Tope said that there has been no community transmission in the state yet. Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia too claimed that there hasn’t been community transmission yet but also predicted that the capital may have 5 lakh cases by the end of July.

In terms of number of cases, India stands at the 6th position in the world behind Spain, the United Kingdom, Russia, Brazil, and the United States of America. In terms of the number of recoveries, India stands at 8th position behind Iran, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Russia, Brazil, and the United States of America.
