On Saturday, India recorded its highest single-day spike in the number of cases with 9,887 cases that took the tally to 2,36,657. With that India went passed Italy in the number of cases and became the sixth worst-hit nation in the world.
Simultaneously, India’s death toll also increased to 6,642 and also witnessed a record increase of 294 deaths in 24 hours. For the third day in a row, India has recorded over 9,000 cases. India is the sixth-worst hit nation in the world after the United States, Brazil, Russia, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The numbers are based on the data of the Johns Hopkins University. However, over 1,14,073 people have recovered successfully in the country. That leaves with 1,15,942 active cases in the country.
The Health Ministry in their briefing said that over 48.20 percent of the patients have recovered so far. The health ministry also disclosed the statistics related to the COVID-19 situation. So far, India has tested 45,24,317 samples. On Saturday alone, India tested 1,37,938 samples. Among the 6,642, the deaths from the state of Maharashtra accounts to 2,849. The second-highest death toll is from Gujarat with 1,190 deaths followed by Delhi with 708, Madhya Pradesh with 384, West Bengal with 366, Uttar Pradesh with 257, Tamil Nadu with 232, Rajasthan with 218, Telangana with 113 and Andhra Pradesh with 73 deaths. In Karnataka, the death toll reached 57 and 48 in Punjab.
More than 70 percent of the deaths have co-morbidities
According to the official website of the Health Ministry, over 70 percent of deaths are of people who have had comorbidities. In terms of cases too, the state of Maharashtra leads with 80,229. Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Gujarat follow Maharashtra with 28,694, 26,334, and 19,094.
In other states like West Bengal, the cases have increased to 7,303. The number of cases in Karnataka also rose to 4,835, the cases in Bihar to 4,596, and the cases reached 3,324 in Jammu and Kashmir. Jharkhand has 881 cases, Chattisgarh with 879, Himachal Pradesh 393, Chandigarh 304, Tripura 692, Goa which had zero cases before has now 196 cases and the union territory of Puducherry has 99 cases.
In the north-eastern states, Nagaland has recorded 94 cases, Arunachal Pradesh with 45, Meghalaya with 33 infections, Mizoram with 22 cases, and Sikkim with 3 cases. The health ministry also told that the figures of the ministry are reconciled with the figures of the Indian Council of Medical Research.
