On Saturday, Bengaluru witnessed its highest single-day jump as the city reported 33 positive cases for COVID-19. This took the tally of the total cases to 335 out of which 155 are still active.
Out of the 33 cases reported on Saturday, 10 are returnees from other states who were in quarantine, six are from a new cluster for which the contact tracing is underway and the remaining 17 are primary contacts of a previously reported case.
Karnataka, on the other hand, reported 141 cases on Saturday and 103 discharges and one fatality. On Saturday alone 15,728 swab samples were tested which is highest in a single day for the state.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced on Saturday that there won’t be a total lockdown on Sunday as it was announced earlier. All activities will function normally.
The Chief Minister said that the decision has been taken in the best interest of people and also due to popular demand. The move to clampdown activities on Sunday was taken as a part of the fourth phase of the lockdown in order to curb movement during the weekends. There were talks of the state looking to extend the Sunday lockdown for a couple of months but looks like it has taken a U-turn and has swept away the move. On 31st, the state will function the same way as it was functioning in the fourth phase of the lockdown.
India reports high numbers
India witnessed its highest spike in the novel coronavirus cases on Saturday as it reported close to 8,380 fresh COVID-19 positive cases taking the total tally up to 1.82 lakh. 193 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.
Among the states contributing to the number of cases, Maharashtra continued to be the largest contributor but several other states also recorded higher numbers on Friday. The National Capital Region of Delhi witnessed over 1,000 cases for the second straight day and the southern state Tamil Nadu reported 800 new cases.
According to the figures by the Central government, more than 70 percent of all the cases in the country have come from 13 cities across states. The center is believed to have identified these 13 cities and is looking to implement stringent measures in the areas.
