On Wednesday Afternoon, Maharashtra’s Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh said that out of the 101 people arrested in the Palghar lynching case, there hasn’t been any Muslim. His statement comes after attempts of certain reports that painted a communal angle to the incident.
An angry mob in the Palghar district lynched 3 people in a horrific crime as the police team of six failed to protect the victims. The video of the heinous crime has been circulated widely on social media and has drawn flack on the mob culture and has raised questions on the Maharashtra Government. The Maharashtra Government was quick enough to act as they arrested 101 people who were involved in the heinous crime. Earlier, Anil Deshmukh had also announced an investigation into the matter.
Time to collectively fight the virus
Anil Deshmukh addressed the people and members of the media through social media platform Facebook and termed the incident as unfortunate and a blot on humanity. He accused the opposition in Maharashtra of giving a communal angle to the incident and said that this is not the time to play politics. He urged the opposition to engage collectively in efforts to fight the pandemic.
Without taking any names, Deshmukh accused the opposition of dreaming of returning to power in the state. He also backed the statement of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and said that it was the rumor of lifting children that triggered the people in Palghar. Setting aside the communal angle, the Home Minister said,
“The police arrested 101 people in connection with the incident within eight hours after it took place. They had run into neighboring jungles but were caught by police. There is no Muslim brother among these 101 people.”
Clarifying another claim that has been doing the rounds of the internet, the minister said that the video clip was distorted as someone’s voice of ‘Oye bas’ was changed to Shoaib. He expressed disappointment in ‘some people’ painting a communal picture of the issue.
“It is not the time to play politics but to fight coronavirus collectively. It is unfortunate some people are seeing ‘Mungerilal ke haseen sapne’ at this juncture.”
An investigation into the incident is underway by the special inspector general and the probe has been handed over to the Crime Investigation Department.
