Karnataka CM Yediyurappa Defends Nikhil Kumaraswamy Wedding, Congratulated the family

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, when reporters asked about the alleged breach of rules at the wedding of Nikhil Kumaraswamy, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa defending the former Chief Minister Kumaraswamy and congratulated for the wedding.

On Thursday, Karnataka reported its highest daily increase with 36 cases being reported. While the movement on roads was being curtailed to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, 48 cars carrying around 100 people were allowed to move so that the guests could attend the Nikhil Kumaraswamy wedding. The wedding that happened at a family farmhouse in Ramanagara district was given special permission from the state government on the 22nd of March. The permission, however, was to hold a low-key wedding ceremony.

During his daily press briefing, the reporters had no option but to ask the Chief Minister about the wedding, the Chief Minister virtually defending the wedding and said,

“All the necessary permissions were given and the marriage was performed in a simple manner. There is no need to discuss it. They had done it well within their limits for which I congratulate them.”

All the guidelines were maintained, says Kumaraswamy

Despite the repeated appeals by the former Chief Minister Kumaraswamy, many residents of the district had swamped the family farmhouse violating the social distancing norm to get a glimpse of the married couple. In a series of tweets, HD Kumaraswamy had thanked his party MLAs and the government for allowing the smooth functioning of the wedding. He also said that all the rules and regulations prescribed by the Union government were maintained throughout the wedding.

Earlier, the BJP had hit out at the former Prime Minister and former Chief Minister for having a lavish wedding in times of the COVID-19 lockdown. They also came down heavily for allowing 100 vehicles for the wedding while many NGOs are waiting for permission to serve food to the poor.

Nikhil Kumaraswamy, the son of HD Kumaraswamy tied the knot to Revathi, the grand-niece of former Karnataka housing Minister, M Krishnappa. According to the media manager of Kumaraswamy, there were 40 people from the bride’s family and 100 in total. Apart from screening the people, there was a disinfecting tunnel set up and guests were asked to pass through it.
