Breaking: Smriti Irani Thumed Congress President Rahul Gandhi In Amethi Constituency

From Tulsi of ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ to a strong leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Smriti Irani has proved her spirit in every way possible. In a political career of 17 years, Irani has managed to defeat the 3 time Amethi constituency winner and Congress President Rahul Gandhi by 30,000 plus votes.

Amethi, one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, witnessed an intense political battle this afternoon. Amethi had become one of the most closely watched constituencies in this election. The BJP and Congress had previously launched an intense campaign on the seat even before the poll dates were even announced.

Congress Loses its faithful constituency

A home for Congress for a decade, the constituency has remained faithful to the party since 2004. But this time the people in Amethi have shown their swing in the mood, as Amethi chose Smriti over Rahul.

Who says Sky cannot have hollow… Tweets Smriti Irani.

It is the biggest shocker from UP. BJP candidate from Amethi, Smriti Irani beats Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

Congress has been winning on the seat since 2004. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi of Indian National Congress won in this seat by defeating the BJP candidate Smitha Irani by a margin of 1,07,903 votes which was 12.34% of the total votes polled in the constituency.

The twist and the turn

On a dramatic turn of event, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, before the result was even announced, accepted the defeat from his rival candidate Smriti Irani.

Acknowledging the outcome, Rahul sent a special message for Smriti Irani. He said, “I Congratulate Smriti Irani for her victory and request her to take care of Amethi with love.”

Rahul was trailing from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh against BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani. However, Rahul Gandhi won from Kerala’s Wayanad constituency, but Amethi became a prestige battle for the Gandhi family which has held the bastion for decades in addition to Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli constituency.

Amithi being home to 1,431,787 voters, the constituency witnessed a 53 percent turnout this electoral season, slightly more than the 2014 parliamentary elections when 52.38 percent votes were polled. Termed as one of the safest seats for the Gandhi family, Amethi has sent Rahul Gandhi thrice to Parliament in the last 15 years. The Congress president has been a favorite among the local population who found themselves emotionally connected to the Gandhi-Nehru family.
