Punita, the wife of Akshay Kumar Singh, one of the four Nirbhaya convicts who are to be hanged on March 20th, fainted outside Delhi’s Patiala Court claiming her husband’s innocence. The Delhi Patiala Court struck down the plea of the convict to put a stay on the execution.

Beating herself with sandals, she cried for justice. She said she had hoped that justice will be delivered for her and her minor son. She also pleaded to be hanged along with her husband. The lawyers who were present at the scene consoled her.

While the lawyer appearing for the convicts said that they are ready to serve the nation in Kashmir or even in Doklam, they don’t deserve to be hanged. However, the counsel appearing for Nirbhaya’s parents said that no one who is a part of our society should be awarded with an unnatural death but also remarked that Akshay is an exception and no leniency should be bestowed upon him.

Earlier on Wednesday, Punita applied for divorce as she does not wish to live the life of a widow. While the court acknowledged her right to seek one, the Patiala court announced on Thursday that there were no pending appeals to halt the execution on the 20th of March.

On 16th December 2012, a young woman was gang-raped by six men inside a bus, tortured her further with an iron rod and was thrown out of the bus along with her friend. Battling for life, she died in the hospital on the 29th of December. Out of the six convicts, one has been dead after he was found hanging in jail, the other was sent to a reform home for being a minor while the other four will be executed.
