Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu and Thala Ajith’s Thunivu were released on January 11 and since then the two are seeing a major clash at the box office. Let’s find out who did better on day 1.
Thunivu vs Varisu Opening Day BO
It was a celebration across cinema halls in Tamil Nadu as two of the biggest crowd-pullers of Kollywood – Ajith Kumar & Thalapathy Vijay – came with their respective films, Thunivu and Varisu. It was a festival on the streets right from midnight with fans waiting to see their superstar on the big screen. Big films of major stars have clashed at the box office, so who won the war on the first day?
The two films had occupancy in the range of 85 to 90 percent throughout the day and showed no signs of slowing down at the ticket window on the opening day. In Tamil Nadu, it was Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu that got a little lead over Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu. According to early box office trends, Thunivu has run for an opening day gross in the range of Rs 19.60 to 21.50 crore, and Varisu on the other hand has made a state gross of Rs 19 to 20.10 crore. It’s a minor difference between the two films, and this has largely come because Thunivu has managed to get better screens than Varisu.
BO strategy
According to Pinkvilla Producers, Boney Kapoor, and Zee Studios with distributors, Red Giant Films ensured that Thunivu gets premium screens across the state. The number of cinemas and shows for both Varisu and Thunivu are not too apart but Thunivu has operated to get better-collecting cinemas and bigger screens by seating, building a bigger capacity than Varisu. Both the films fought neck to neck in Tamil Nadu on the occupancy front, and it’s the capacity that has played a role in determining the winner.
Surprisingly, outside of Tamil Nadu, both Thunivu and Varisu were equal at the box office. Nevertheless, in this case, it’s Varisu that has got a slight edge over Thunivu. According to estimates, Varisu collected in the range of Rs 8.50 crore to 9.00 crore outside of Tamil Nadu and Thunivu on the other hand did Rs 8.00 to 8.50 crore. The All India Gross for both films will be in the range of Rs 27 crore, which takes the combined full-day total to around Rs 54 crore.
Meanwhile, on social media, both films have received mixed reviews from the masses. Many fans have called Thunivu a one-man show. For Varisu, some have called it a typical Telugu film. However, the craze for both films is massive. What happens at the box office, we will have to wait and watch.
