The Telangana encounter killing the 4 accused in the vet’s rape case shock the whole world. Some people praised the immediate measures taken by the police while some pointed out this action to be a planned shooting. This is not the first time that India has witnessed a controversial police encounter. There were various operations previously that saw a lot of disputes and debates. Here are some of the controversial police encounters that shock the whole nation.
The Batla House operation
In 2008, two suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists were shot and in the crossfire, a Delhi police officer lost his life. The police told that terrorists were hiding up in a house in the Batla House area in Delhi and were planning an attack on the region.
During the encounter, Atif Amin and Mohammed Sajid were shot dead by the police. But unfortunately, Police officer Mohan C Sharma died in the operation.
Mohammad Saif another accused was caught whereas the other two involved, Shahzad and Junaid, escaped. The encounter operation saw a lot of criticism, many claimed that the police had killed two young students in the Batla House encounter doing it on a purpose. Shahzad was caught in 2010 and convicted to life imprisonment in 2013.
Ishrat Jahan encounter by Gujarat police
A 19-year-old woman named Ishrat Jahan who happens to be from Mumbra, along with three men were killed by the Gujarat police in an encounter. The police believed that the four of them had planned to kill the then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. Taking immediate action the police killed all of them in their residence.
The SC directed CBI to investigate the case, which filed a charge sheet against several Gujarat police officers for their engagement in the encounter.
In 2019, D G Vanzara, who began the encounter and was consequently jailed. He was then removed from the case. The case is still advancing in the Ahmedabad special CBI court where Ishrat’s mother Shamim Kausar recently filed a petition seeking her withdrawal from the case as she was tired of fighting it for so many years.
SIMI terrorists encounter in Bhopal
In 2016, eight Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) comrades were shot dead on the outskirts of Bhopal. The incident occurred hours after an accuse undertrials allegedly slit a guard’s throat and escaped from a city prison.
The operation came up differently after video footage surfaced that severally showed a policeman tapping bullets into a man from close range. Some unknown men were also witnessed in the video displaying a knife that was cleverly wrapped in a plastic cover.
In 2018, a judicial board was identified to investigate the encounter made by police. Later the court gave the policemen a clean chit.
Ramnarayan Gupta Case
In 2006, Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya was killed in a fake encounter by Mumbai police.
Lakhan Bhaiya was recognized to be gangster Chhota Rajan’s close helper. Four days after the encounter, his brother ran to the Bombay high court, claiming that his brother was killed in a personal conflict with the Mumbai police.
Probes into the case exposed that Ramnarayan Gupta was pulled up by the Mumbai police encounter specialist team from Navi Mumbai and later killed the same evening in an alleged encounter in Versova, north west Mumbai.
In 2013, the local court gave life imprisonment to 21 people, including 13 police personnel, for killing Ramnarayan Gupta.
Telangana Rape-Murder all the 4 Accused while trying to escape from police were gunned down in a crossfire. The police say the accused started attacking them with sticks, stones, and sharp objects and snatched their weapons, which were already unlocked. In the process of retaliation, all 4 were killed by the police.
