It had been a while since Amazon Prime tasted success with their direct-OTT releases. However, with their recent film Soorarai Pottru, the streaming giant has hit the bullseye. The Suriya-starrer dropped on the platform on November 12th and is available in multiple languages, including Kannada.
What is Soorarai Pottru all about?
The film is a fictionalized life-story of Karnataka-based Captain GR Gopinath. The inspirational figure fought all the odds to start his own aeroplane company, and this forms the plot of Soorarai Pottru. While Suriya plays the protagonist, the film also features Aparna Balamurali, Paresh Rawal, Prakash Belawadi, Urvashi, and Achyuth Kumar.
Why have the viewers gone crazy about this movie?
Stories of underdogs always resonate well with the audience. With Soorarai Pottru, there is an added incentive of exceptional performances, brilliant music, and splendid cinematography. The fact that most of the happenings occurred in real life adds to the intrigue. References to APJ Abdul Kalam and Vijay Mallya ring in the relatability factor.
While those were some of the factors, Soorarai Pottru, at the end of it all, is a brilliantly made piece of cinema. It fuels hope and provides a strong message to the viewers. All of this at the fingertips on your phone appends to the excitement.
A proud moment for Kannadigas
Captain GR Gopinath hails from Karnataka, and his story being told on a large canvass is a proud moment. The film also features prominent Kannada actors like Prakash Belawadi and Achyuth Kumar. In the Kannada version of the film, there is also a reference to Kuvempu and his model of the ‘Mantramangalya’ marriage. The makers really have to be appreciated for achieving this depth even for a dubbed variant.

Kannada film makers are so removed from Kannada nativity. #SooraraiPottru pic.twitter.com/FAIBTWFymT
