South films do well but they follow template of 80s films: Actor Rahul Dev

Actor Rahul Dev said that despite the South Indian films following the template of the 70s and 80s, they are a hit among the audience.

Action sequences in regional films

Rahul Dev, who recently appeared in Disney+ Hotstar’s film Gaslight alongside Sara Ali Khan, Chitrangda Singh, and Vikrant Massey, talked about the success of films from the south Indian film industries despite their outsized action scenes and unrealistic portrayals.

In a recent promotional interview for the film, Rahul was asked about his assignment in regional cinema. He said that the films down South are performing well, but there are over-the-top action sequences that do not happen in real life. Rahul said he comes from a learned background and therefore, he has to leave his brains at home while doing these films.

According to the actor, in real life when two people fight, they don’t take off their shirts and show their bodies as shown in South Indian cinema. Rahul adds that there’s nothing wrong with such a scene, from the commercial angle, and many people like watching it. He also said that we should not decide what is wrong and right because creativity can be expressed in different ways.

Similar template from the 80s

He further described that South Indian films follow a similar template to films from the 70s and 80s, with over-the-top fight sequences and exaggerated characters.

Nevertheless, he stressed that the way the story is expressed and sensed by the audience is what matters most. Rahul also hoped that he’d get to play key roles in South films, where the narration of the story can captivate the audience.

Rahul, who has worked in films like Champion, Omkara, Torbaaz, and Raat Baaki Hai, among others, recently starred in the Kannada film Kabzaa alongside Kiccha Sudeep, Upendra, and Shriya Saran, which was released last month.

As an actor, Rahul believes that the current skill format of an actor is more natural, particularly in the OTT space, and hopes to receive more challenging roles that allow him to showcase his talents.
