The global shutdown due to coronavirus pandemic has changed the world a lot in the last 7 months or so. The movie industry has been hit badly with theatres being shut down around the world and the shoots being halted.

Recently, Shabana Azmi was asked about Bollywood being targetted by a certain section. She replied, in an interview with Mumbai Mirror, that “the Hindi film industry is a sitting duck; it is easy to hurl malevolent accusations.” She further added that it is a systematic campaign to divert people’s mind from other important issues like “failing economy, China border tensions, spiralling COVID cases, and farmers’ agitation by putting the spotlight on the supposed ills of the film industry”.

Further talking about the industry, she added how the controversy around the death of Sushant Singh Rajput had “started as a nepotism charge, then, Rhea (Chakraborty) was accused of murder and siphoning off Rs 15 crore from Sushant’s (Singh Rajput) account, none of which stood any ground. The AIIMS report clearly states it was not murder. So ‘Justice for Sushant’ has given way to ‘Weed out the Druggies’, the goal post keeps changing. Instead of focusing on mental health as a serious issue in our society, it’s sensationalism that’s at play.”

When pointed out about Kangana Ranaut and her remarks against the Hindi film industry, Shabana responded, “Kangana has started believing in her own myth. She says she taught feminism to the film industry, she taught it nationalism. I’m glad she spelled that out because nobody else had noticed! I think she fears the day when she will no longer be in the headlines and so has to keep making outrageous statements to stay in the news. Poor girl, why doesn’t she just do what she is best at, which is acting.”
