In between a debate of Bollywood vs South, and a majority of Hindi films struggling to find success at the box office, Prithviraj thinks it is SRK’s Pathaan that will bring new hopes for a comeback.
Bollywood’s worst phase
The Hindi film industry could have just moved on with the poor performances of a few big films and ignored this time as a dark phase but the triumph of southern cinema has made the recent spate of failure more difficult to swallow. It’s not like people have prevented themselves from going to theatres post the pandemic. They are, and in fact in huge numbers. They are just not watching Bollywood anymore.
Hindi cinema is churning flops after flops. And probably it just needs one blockbuster film to come back on track. And that’s what Prithviraj Sukumaran, Malayalam actor and filmmaker, thinks.
Prithviraj’s confidence
In a recent round table interview with Film Companion that also featured Kamal Haasan, SS Rajamouli, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Swapna Dutt, and Lokesh Kanagaraj, Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran talked about the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan starrer being the savior of Bollywood.
When asked about Bollywood failing to deliver a hit, Prithviraj said that it is just a phase as there was a time not too long ago when South folks would look at Bollywood’s success with awe and wonder how they are doing it, delivering major hits and opening new overseas markets.
He further claims that all Bollywood needs is one big hit and wonders if it is going to be Pathaan that will save Hindi cinema.
"There will be one big hit, maybe its #Pathaan and everything will be back for Bollywood" :- Prithviraj Sukumaran

He said, “There have been times not too long ago when we’ve set down the table & thought, ‘How are they doing it? How is Hindi cinema cracking this? How are they able to open up such huge overseas markets?’ And that was not too long ago. I am not talking about the medieval ages. So, this I truly believe is a phase. There will be one big hit, maybe it’s Pathaan.”
“I know some of the newer films that are on floors right now, what those filmmakers are making. Some of them are really exciting. It could just be one big film followed by another big film and the whole narrative will change,” he adds.
