In the upcoming by-polls scheduled for November 3rd, the Karnataka Congress has fielded a fresh face, Kusuma H, in the RR Nagar constituency.
At the age of 31, Kusuma joined the Indian National Congress recently amid many speculations. She holds an MS degree in Information Technology from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She currently works as an assistant professor of computer science at the Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering. Also, she is the wife of the late IAS officer DK Ravi who died in March 2015.
On October 7th, senior congress leader Siddaramaiah and the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee DK Shivkumar announced that Kusuma would be given the ticket from the party in the RR Nagar constituency. The former MLA from the constituency, Muniratna, has changed parties and is now likely to contest from the BJP ticket.
Kusuma’s father, Hanumantharayappa too joined the Congress party along with her. Earlier, he was with the Congress party before he hopped with the JDS. Apparently, it was a dream of Hanumantharayappa to contest elections from the RR Nagar constituency which his daughter is now fulfilling. In fact, in the 2008 assembly elections, he came close to contesting from the constituency. He also tried to contest again in 2018 after the death of DK Ravi but was denied a ticket. However, DK Ravi’s mother Gowramma has raised her concerns against Kusuma using her son’s name in an election.
The induction of Kusuma into the party is a thing of importance to Congress. When the IAS officer committed suicide in 2015, the congress government under Siddaramaiah was criticized heavily for mishandling the suicide case. For the same reason, Siddaramaiah, DK Shivkumar, and another senior leader of Congress Parameshwar attended the induction ceremony of Kusuma.
