He is the man who successfully argued for the Hindu’s ownership of the entire disputed land. The two-time Attorney General of India, K Parasaran is an advocate who won it for Ram Lalla.
A 92-year-old advocate
A 92-year-old advocate K. Parasaran, who spent all of his life devoted to Ram Lalla, deserves an applaud for what he has done to the country. It was his hard work and dedication that ended the 400-year-old sensitive dispute. During the hearing, the senior lawyer had asked the top court that it must take “full and complete justice” in all objects and his last wish before he dies was to finish the case.
CJI: Do u want to sit & argue?
Parasaran: It’s ok. You’re too kind. The tradition of the Bar has been to stand & argue, and I’m concerned about the tradition. My last wish before I die is to finish this case.
K. Parasaran’s dream came true when Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi pronounced the historical verdict. As soon as the verdict was over, sitting in the front row, lawyers from the Hindu side surrounded him and congratulated him for his work which turned out to be an emotional moment.
His initial life
Advocate Parasaran happens to be a Hindu scholar who has read Upanishads, Gita, and other scriptures, and he is quite often seen quoting Hindu scriptures in his arguments. He was born in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu in 1927. Parasaran’s father Kesava Aiyengar was a lawyer himself and a Vedic scholar trained at the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court.
He has three sons, Mohan, Satish, and Balaji, who are also lawyers. Mohan Parasaran had worked as the Solicitor General in the UPA-II government and now all of them are also in the legal business.
K. Parasaran started practicing in the top court in 1958 and he has also served as Attorney General of India from 1983 to 1989 under Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
In 1985, he had advised the government against acting on the show-cause notice issued to demolish the Indian Express building as it was legally unsound. However, when the Indira Gandhi government neglected his opinion, he refused to support the government in court and offered to quit. Despite everything, he was later elevated as the Attorney General by the government.
K. Parasaran’s achievements
The NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 2003 and the Manmohan Singh led UPA-1 government awarded him the Padma Vibhushan in 2011.
In June 2012, he also received a presidential nomination to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s parliament, for a period of six years. The senior counsel was also presented “Most Eminent Senior Citizen Award” by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on October 16, 2019.
Important cases fought
In 1997, he had also come to the rescue of Priyanka Gandhi in a family court at Tis Hazari. In this case, a man alleged Priyanka that she was already married to him. Later it was found that the man was mentally unstable and had intentionally appealed in the court, days before Priyanka got married to Robert Vadra.
The senior advocate had also appeared for the Nair Service Society, in the Sabarimala case, to defend the prohibition on the entry of women in the temple.
And now, the Ayodhya dispute has come to an end. The good old man is sure to score a hundred while taking several more cases to their legitimate end.
