Recently, during an interview with Anupama Chopra, Yash and Prashanth Neel were asked about why today’s films usually sideline women. The duo was careful enough to answer this sensitive question. This is what they said.
Sidelining women in movies
One of the most anticipated films of all time, ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ is going to be on the big screen from April 14th. With this, Yash is busy attending interviews and answering sensitive questions.
The latest, a Youtube Channel named Film Companion, hosted by Anupama Chopra fired a sensitive question at both Prashanth Neel and Yash.
“The movies that are coming now have sidelined the women. It was seen with Pushpa, RRR, and KGF: Chapter 1. And they are also upcoming big-budget movies for Prashanth Neel like Salaar starring Prabhas. How do we ensure that women will also get a place in upcoming films in between popular male figures?” questioned Anupama Chopra.
“They already have a place” points out Prashanth Neel.
To sound more sensible, Yash said, “The story in KGF is about the mother. It’s about her son and her dream. This is our way of showing respect to a woman.”
Spotlight for the woman in the film
Anupama, however, argues that the film only concentrates on Rocky Bhai aka Yash, so where is that spotlight for the woman in the film.
“We are not sidelining any woman here. Either most of us (in the film) fight for a woman or we fight for their dreams,” Yash defends.
The anchor adds to her opinion and asks “are women ever gonna be made substantial in the movie”. Or will there be a powerful female character grabbing the audience’s attention?
“It depends what storyline the director has or from whose perspective the story is told. For instance, if you show Mahabharata from Draupadi’s point of view, the story will be different. From Duryodhana’s point of view, there will be a completely different story. It all depends on what directors bring to the table. So we have to narrate the story accordingly.”
“We should not forget that KGF: Chapter 2 has Ramika Sen who portrays a character of a strong and powerful woman. Also, Easwari Rao, who is playing a significant role in the movie,” says Yash.
“You will have no such doubts after the 14th of April. And hopefully, you will have a different opinion on me,” Prashanth Neel sums up the question.
