On Sunday, BJP senior leader Subramanian Swamy shocked Twitter as he called Nathuram Godse as an agent of Lord Mountbatten.
On January 30th, 1948, Nathuram Godse shot Mahatma Gandhi on his chest in a prayer meeting. Following the demise of the father of the nation, Godse was arrested and faced trial for murder. He was later sentenced to death. The death of the Mahatma led to massive social unrest. The government of India later banned the Hindu organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha for their alleged involvement in the conspiracy.
Since then, there has been an attempt by some to show Godse in a different light. The current BJP MP from Bhopal, Sadhvi Pragya Thakur called Godse a true patriot. The Hindu Mahasabha has also laid a foundation stone for a temple in his name. On Sunday too, Godse became a point of conversation on Twitter while some tried to call him a real hero. A Twitter user said,
“Godse was the Real Hero of India, not Gandhi. Godse knew that Gandhi was wavering NOT in favoring Hindus as Godse had no choice but to save India. Godse knew if Gandhi lives any longer than it would be bad for Hindus & India. Don’t get me wrong, Gandhi was good BUT Godse was GOD.”
Godse Agent Of Mountbatten?
This tweet drew a lot of flak on social media including journalist Tarek Fatah. He wrote,
“Are you serious? Praising a murderer, a killer who assassinated Gandhi? With friends like you, India doesn’t need enemies. I suppose you also celebrate Dr. King’s assassination as well as Lincoln’s murder.”
This in turn provoked Subramanian Swamy to provide his opinion and said,
“Godse by killing Gandhiji empowered Nehryu-who in turn blamed Home Minister Sardar Patel by word of mouth. He banned RSS and defamed the Hindutva forces. Thus Godse was defacto, if not dejure, an agent of Mountbatten who was hell-bent on restraining Gandhiji from dissolving Congress.”
