There are a few actors who bypass all the boundaries and get closer to hearts in a way that they stay with us forever even after their physical exit. Kannada film industry had witnessed one such legendary actor who loomed on his own roots to become the face of South-Indian cinema and there is no exaggeration to it. Yes, we are talking about the legendary actor Dr. Vishnuvardhan.

It was 1988 and there was a movie that got released which went on to become a blockbuster hit. A movie of an off-beat genre for that time had successfully managed to impress both critics and the audience. Dr. Vishnu might have portrayed so many vivid roles in his career but this character named Vijay Kumar stands apart. Well, the movie we are talking about is Suprabhata, a romantic drama written and directed by Dinesh Babu. It had Vishnuvardhan and Suhasini in the lead roles and the pair was considered as the romantic best of that time.

A Musical Blockbuster Hit Of 1988

Suprabhata was a directorial debut for Dinesh Babu and on his very first attempt, he had delivered a masterpiece for the Kannada audience. It had music composed by the legendary Rajan-Nagendra and lyrics written by Sahithya Brahma Chi. Uday Shankar. Whenever this combination had come together, it had always given blockbusters and Suprabhata is just one of them.

Upon release, the movie was declared a musical blockbuster hit with every song in the album becoming popular across the state. A song titled ‘Nanna Haadu Nannadu Nanna Raaga Nannadu’ where Vishnuvardhan is seen dancing and jumping became a huge hit. The actor himself had mentioned in one of his interviews that this particular song was his favorite.


A Record Of Winning 8 Different Awards In A Year

Suprabhata was the first Kannada movie to win 8 different awards in a single year. It was a record of that time for the movie to have bagged multiple awards in Kannada Cinema. In 1989, Dinesh Babu was awarded the Best Cinematographer at the Karnataka State Awards. Followed by, he was declared Filmfare Best Director in 1988. On the other hand, Dr. Vishnuvardhan bagged Filmfare Best Actor award coupled with Karnataka State Awards.

Plot Of The Movie

Vijay, a simple living man owns a petrol bunk on a hill station and has a sister who is a doctor living in the city. He is immensely talkative and full of life with a past of stutter speech. This lonely yet happy man once provides shelter to Hema (played by Suhasini) and her brother who comes with another dark past. Hema pretends to be mute to whom Vijay falls in love with. The story unfolds when Vijay finds out the truth.


Suprabhata is one of the finest Kannada films you can watch out for. There is love, innocence, and sacrifice coupled with a social message which stands relevant even today. The movie is available on Youtube if you have not watched it or if you wish to watch it again.
