End of an era: Sania Mirza announces retirement from professional Tennis

Ace Tennis player Sania Mirza has announced retirement from professional tennis on Wednesday. Sania is in fact the most successful female tennis player in the country.

Her announcement came in the backdrop of how injuries are taking a toll on her after her recent game. Recently she was knocked out of the Australian Open along with her teammate Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine.


“I have decided this will be my last season. I’m taking it week by week, not sure if I can last the season, but I want to,” she told the press in Melbourne, in comments later confirmed to AFP by her father.

“I still feel I can play well, go deep into tournaments and all that. But beyond this season, I don’t see my body do it either. It’s beat.” She added.

The Indian tennis player has won six Grand Slams and has reached the summit of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) doubles ranking.


She belongs to the city of Hyderabad and started her Tennis stint at the age of 6, she went on to play with and against some of the greatest players in the world.

With Mahesh Bhupati she won two grand slam titles. She became the doubles No.1 in 2015 with Martina Hingis.
She is a 42 times tour winner and two times Asian Games gold medallist.
She has also won the Women’s single silver medal and a bronze one in the 2010 Commonwealth games in India.

She is currently married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and has a baby boy, Izhaan Mirza. She has been a recipient of awards like the Arjuna Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and even the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
