Elon Musk who is the CEO of Tesla and the PM Modi led Govt in the center have been in talks since 2019 about starting Tesla in India but according to the reports disagreements over a local factory and the country’s import duties of as much as 100% have led to a conflict.
While Musk has demanded a reduction in the taxes, the Govt has been pushing for local procurement of the same. Previously we also heard the Indian ministry related to the same saying that they are trying to Tesla from selling China-made cars in India and instead set up a local factory.
India today can be counted as a big and upcoming EV market in the world currently monopolized by major players like Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota among others.
Tesla is confident that the players will be bombarded if it enters the market but after a tough fight from them. The real competitors for them would be Mercedes, BMW, and such high-end brands that have also started to venture into the EV business.
It will worthwhile to see what Tesla does and how the conflict with the Govt of India will be resolved.
