Ambareesh, an aspiring actor entering the industry as a Villain to end up becoming a legendary hero is a story of past now. He’s been an important name in the Kannada film industry and has contributed a lot to cinema, language, and culture here. Ambareesh might have physically left us forever but through his characters, he will continue to reverberate in the hearts of cinema lovers. Remembering the late Kannada star, here we are with some of the iconic characters played by Rebel star Ambareesh on today’s read.
Kanwar Lal of Antha
Antha, one of the iconic films that have come in KFI is undoubtedly a milestone feat in Ambareesh’s cine career. In this plot, he is seen playing two characters; Sushil Kumar and Kanwar Lal. Sushil is an honest police officer while Kanwar Lal is a cold-blooded murderer and a gangster with a tough look. The dialogue of him saying, ‘Kutte, Kanwar Nahi Kanwar Lal Bolo’ and the mannerism of Ambareesh still stand fresh and contemporary.
Krishna of Mandyada Gandu
A 1994 released Kannada movie went on to become a commercial hit to give Ambareesh a title ‘Mandyada Gandu’. A character called Krishna played by the rebel star fighting against the evil society was widely appreciated and applauded.
Mooga Of Shubha Mangala
In a novel based movie starring Aarathi and Srinath in lead roles, Ambareesh played a supporting character called Mooga. Going with the story, it is a character with no dialogues. Though Ambareesh had fewer scenes, he had nailed the role to its perfection.
Ramanna Of Ranganayaki
Directed by the great Puttanna Kanagal, Ranganayaki is based on the novel written by Ashwatha. It has Aarathi., Ambareesh, Ramakrishna, Ashok and others playing the primary characters. A character called Ramanna played by Ambareesh in the movie was critically recognized mirroring his acting skills.
Jaleela of Naagarahaavu
A character played by Ambareesh was first offered to Rajnikanth. The iconic character which gave a turn to Ambareesh’s Cine career was not in his destiny. However, things rolled and today, when we say Ambareesh, Jaleela comes in front. Jaleela is a flirt who appears in a couple of scenes but leaves an unprecedented charm on the audience.
Singari Of Masanada Hoovu
Puttanna Kangal’s last as director, Masanada Hoovu is a movie based on T.R Subba Rao’s novel of the same name. It was completed by K.S.L Swamy which stars Jayanathi, Ambareesh, and Aparna in lead roles. A character called singaru played by Ambareesh got him the State award for best-supporting actor.
Amarnath Of Chakravyuha
Ambarish became a superstar with this movie. The title “Rebel Star” was coined to him only after this movie. The success of the film made Amitabh Bachan act the same role in Hindi (Inquilaab – 1984). The climax of the film – when the hero shoots all the winners in the election. A twist at the end that made the political and cop film of Kannada a blockbuster.
Kariya Of Paduvaralli Pandavaru
Directed by Puttanna Kanagal, Paduvaralli Pandavaru remains to be one of the cult films of Kannada. It stars Ramakrishna, Jai Jagadish, Dheerendra Gopal, Musuri Krishna Murthy, and Arathi in the lead roles. Ambarish has played the character called Kariya, Sahukara’s servant. Among all the characters of Paduvaralli, Kariya comes with his own flavor and color.
Tony Of Tony
A 1982 movie directed by HR Bhargava starring Ambareesh, Lakshmi, and Srinath was a blockbuster hit of that time. The story revolves around a young woman losing her love in an accident. Ambarish plays the character of Tony in the movie.
Vijay Kumar Of Mrugalaya
In a 1996 released movie directed by V. Somashekar, Ambareesh played the character called Vijay Kumar. Vijay is a Zoo Officer who notices illegal activities taking place at the Zoo and fights against the odds to conserve wild animals.
Rebel star in Jai Karnataka
A 1989 remake of Hindi’s Mr. India, Jai Karnataka was directed and produced by Dwarakeesh. Here, Ambareesh played the role of Anil Kapoor. The film did decently well and Ambareesh as Jai Karnataka made a mark.
Wodeya Of Diggajaru
A 2001 film directed by D. Rajendra Babu brought Vishnuvardhan and Ambareesh together. It became a blockbuster hit where Ambareesh played a primary character called Wodeya while Vishnuvardhan appeared as Chikkayya and Muttayya. Ambareesh’s performance in the climax scene where he loses his best friend to death had moved audience to tears in the theatres.
