Brewing Political Instability in Maharastra: Uddhav Thackeray Phone Calls PM Modi

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday evening and sought his assistance in mitigating the developing political instability in the state.

Uddhav must become a Legislative Council Member by May 28th

Uddhav Thackeray is currently not a legislative member of the State Government and if he has to continue in his office as the Chief Minister of the state, he must get nominated to the Legislative Council within May 28th.

However, two resolutions have been passed by the state Cabinet for the nomination but Governor BS Koshyari is yet to take a decision on the matter. The current crisis in the nation is cited as a reason for the postponement of the elections. The latest resolution was passed by the Cabinet on Monday.

Uddhav calls PM Modi on Tuesday

On Tuesday, Uddhav called PM Modi and briefed him about the situation in the state. He also sought his assistance in mitigating the issue. As per the sources to India Today, in the call, Uddhav said: “The state cannot afford political instability during such a crucial period and it will also send across a wrong message. It should be avoided.” The Prime Minister is said to have replied that he would be looking into the matter at the earliest. 

Maharashtra is the worst-hit country in the state with respect to the Coronavirus cases. There have also been reports that lockdown would be extended beyond May 3rd in regions such as Mumbai, Pune, and Thane in the state.
