Big News: Rishab Shetty’s Kantara sent for Oscars, confirms Hombale Productions

Days after SS Rajamouli’s RRR was sent for the Oscars, Rishab Shetty’s Kantara has also been pushed for the Academy Awards. It has been confirmed by the production house that the film has been sent for the Oscars nomination.

Kantara for Oscars

Kantara has now become one of the most watched and talked about films of 2022. The film earned over Rs 460 crore worldwide and made Rishab Shetty, who acted in Kantara and directed it, a Pan India name. Apart from making national headlines, the film is also going to try its chances at the biggest award ceremony on the planet – The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars.

After SS Rajamouli’s RRR was submitted at Oscars 2023 in the ‘For Your Consideration’ category, it is now confirmed that Kantara has also presented its application for Oscars 2023. Speaking to India Today, Hombale Productions founder Vijay Kirgandur confirmed the same and said that the team is hopeful although they sent in the application at the very last moment.

“We have submitted our application for Oscars for Kantara and have our fingers crossed as the final nominations are yet to come,” confirmed Vijay Kirgandur, the founder of Hombale Productions. He mentioned, “Kantara as a story is so rooted that we hope it can find a voice worldwide as well.”

Kantara 2

Vijay also confirmed that Kantara is set to be turned into a franchise. He said, “Rishab is away and once he is back, we will discuss what we want to do — a sequel or a prequel. We will have something in a couple of months. We definitely have plans for Kantara 2 but there’s no timeline.” Rishab had earlier said that he plans to make a follow-up to the blockbuster movie.

According to Hombale Films partner Chaluve Gowda, the audience connected with the film as it showed the deep-rooted rituals and beliefs that are prevailing in Indian society.

“These rituals are there all over the world in a different ways. Whatever was there in Kantara, the same story can happen in any part of the country. That’s how people connected to Kantara. People related to it. We wanted to show a local subject to a broader audience,” he added.

Also featuring Achyuth Kumar and Sapthami Gowda in pivotal roles, Kantara was also released in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. Besides the audiences, many industry personalities including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan praised the movie on social media. The movie has already earned over Rs 460 crore worldwide at the box office.
