Bengaluru: 99-Year-Old Recovers From COVID-19 Becomes Oldest To Beat The Disease In The State

A piece of news that is sure to provide a ray of hope to citizens of Bengaluru is that a 99-year-old patient in the city has successfully recovered from the novel coronavirus disease. This has left the medical fraternity related.

99-year-old Marceline Saldanha contracted the virus after she came in contact with her grandson and was later hospitalized on June 18th which happened to be her 99th birthday. She was admitted to the designated COVID-19 facility of Victoria Hospital. Her family members – 70-year-old son Vincent, daughter-in-law Rita, and grandson Vijay.

Nine days after getting admitted to the hospital, Marceline walked out of the hospital along with her grandson after she tested negative in the COVID-19 test. With this, she has become the oldest patient in the state to beat the disease.

As per her son, they developed symptoms like cold, cough, and fever while Marceline was asymptomatic. However, the family members are still clueless about where they contracted the virus from as all of them remained indoors in their Kumaraswamy layout residence. The lady’s grandson, Vijay, was the only one who would go out to buy groceries.

‘She is always Positive’

While the family initially approached a private hospital, the private hospital refused to accept COVID-19 cases. They had no option left except to admit themselves to Victoria Hospital. Vincent says,

“We had reservations about the Victoria hospital, but it turned out to be a good one. We did not spend a penny since the day we were admitted and my mother and son fully recovered.”

Dr. Asima Banu, the nodal officer of the Trauma Care Center of the Victoria Hospital said that Marceline was initially reluctant to get the treatment at the hospital. She said,

“With moral support from doctors and nurses at the Trauma Care Center, she recovered very fast. She is always positive in life.”

As per reports, patients who are symptomatic on the day of testing is more likely to succumb to the deadly disease as opposed to asymptomatic patients. As of June 21st, 114 deaths out of 137 in the state are of symptomatic patients.
