Azim Premji’s Wipro Converts Its Pune Office Into COVID-19 Hospital In Under A Month

In its bid to help the Maharashtra government to tackle the ever-rising coronavirus crisis in the state, the Wipro head Azim Hashim Premji has converted its Wipro IT facility into 450-bed dedicated COVID-19.

The company has completed its task in about one month after it signed the MoU with the Maharashtra government. The hospital was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray, through a video interaction. The official handle of the office of the Chief Minister tweeted confirming the same. In a tweet, the chairman of Wipro Rishad Premji thanked Thackeray and said,

“Thank you to the Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Uddhav Ji for inaugurating Wipro’s repurposed campus into a 450-bed COVID-19 hospital in Pune. Thanks to the Government of Maharashtra for their deep support in enabling a one-month turnaround.”

Facility Ready In Under A Month

The Maharashtra government and the Wipro signed an MoU in the first week of May to convert it’s IT facility into a COVID19 hospital. As per the statement released by Wipro, the 450-bed hospital will be equipped to treat the moderate cases of COVID-19 including 12 critical wards. This facility also has 24 rooms to accommodate doctors and medical staff. Apart from appointing an administrator and skeletal support staff, Wipro will also provide physical infrastructure, medical furniture, and equipment. Rishad Premji said,

“We are completely committed to supporting the country’s response to the pandemic and believe that we must all work together to deal with this crisis and minimize its human impact. We stand firmly with the Government of Maharashtra in its battle against COVID-19.”

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray thanked Wipro’s efforts and said,

“This humanitarian contribution by Wipro will further strengthen our medical infrastructure and benefit the medical fraternity who are at the forefront of our fight against the pandemic.”

Instead of donating the funds to the PM CARES fund, Wipro committed to Rs. 1,125 crores towards tackling the health and humanitarian crisis. Wipro decided to enable a dedicated medical and service fraternity for the frontline workers.

The total number of cases in Maharashtra rose and reached 97,648 out of which 47,980 people are active and 46078 have recovered successfully.
